Bright thinking: Laser projectors bring spectacular 10,000 lumen images to Manchester Metropolitan University

Working with Manchester Metropolitan University and integrator Roche AV, we’ve created a stunning 10,000 lumen brightness projection solution for the University’s main lecture theatre. It’s made possible by images from multiple VPL-FHZ65 laser projectors, blended seamlessly to deliver super-bright presentations in the large hall.

Investing in a thriving academic future

Manchester Metropolitan University is one of the largest campus-based universities in the UK, providing an inspirational educational environment for a total student population of over 36,000. With its roots in higher education dating back to 1824, Manchester Metropolitan University remains committed to its strong future through an ongoing £350 million investment programme in buildings and facilities.

Towards zero maintenance – cutting overheads with laser projection

There are over 600 teaching rooms of various sizes at the University, including smaller classrooms, lecture halls and IT labs. Keeping the technology infrastructure up-to-date for an institution of this size is no trivial task.

As part of a large-scale upgrade of Manchester Metropolitan University’s AV facilities, the University decided to install a state-of-the-art projection solution in its largest lecture theatre that also doubles as an exhibition hall.

Hosting a variety of events including fashion shows and conferences, this large space presents some complex AV support requirements. In particular, it’s a challenge accessing projectors positioned high up on the ceiling – previously a cause of considerable downtime for routine maintenance including lamp and filter changes.

Deciding to replace its aging lamp-based projectors, Manchester Metropolitan University’s AV team resolved to implement a more modern, flexible, energy efficient solution requiring virtually zero maintenance. The clear answer was laser projection by Sony – delivering impeccable image quality teamed with many years of reliable operation.

Super-bright images bring lectures to life

In conjunction with Manchester Metropolitan University’s AV team and integrator Roche AV, Sony designed and implemented a solution that features six VPL-FHZ65 3LCD WUXGA laser projectors with a colour brightness of 6,000 lumens.

From December 2015 through to February 2016, four laser projectors were installed in the University’s lecture theatre/exhibition hall. By stacking 2x 6,000 lumens projectors front facing as well as back facing, they were able to create a stunning image with approximately 10,000 lumens brightness to impress students as well as event attendees.

The projectors’ stylish blend-in design augments the large room, while their exceptional brightness and clarity assure presentations that always stand out, even in high ambient light.

Two additional VPL-FHZ65 projectors have been installed in other lecture theatres on campus, creating an immersive, informative educational environment with crisply-detailed, high-impact presentations.

Rock-solid reliability and supreme image quality

The projector’s highly reliable Z-Phosphor laser light source offers a rated 20,000 hour lifespan with virtually no maintenance – reducing the need for costly lamp replacements and the worry of sudden failures during a lecture or event.

As an extra refinement, the VPL-FHZ65 features an automated filter system that cuts the hassle of regular dust cleaning. Coupled with a range of energy-saving features, this further drives down long-term ownership costs for Manchester Metropolitan University’s AV department.

“It was important for the University to find a solution that maintained a high performance, excellent image quality and compatibility with our existing technologies” says Neil Anderson, ITS Campus Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University.

“We wanted projectors that were reliable while producing a solid image with good colour rendition. After seeing a demo of Sony’s projectors, we were convinced that laser technology was the right decision for our unique requirements and the solution has lived up to our high expectations. We are looking forward to further developing our campus technology in the years to come”.
