NUCLeUS Smart Application: Rotation Correction

NUCLeUS Smart Application: “Rotation Correction” is one example of a NUCLeUS tool that assists viewing video from a rigid endoscope that typically provides no reference to the horizon. This can make it difficult for clinical staff in the OR and/or students to accurately interpret on-screen images while the horizon keeps changing. The Rotation Correction NUCLeUS Smart Application ensures that video displayed on the monitor remains correctly oriented regardless of the endoscopes’ physical rotation while inside the patient.

Re-set your horizon

The horizon can be re-set at any time via the NUCLeUS user interface, or from a button on the camera head. The Rotation Correction Smart Application greatly enhances the viewability of this type of scope with no perceptible delay on the monitor. With the ability to add new tools on the fly, NUCLeUS lets hospitals add these types of features to rooms as needed. Should an OR need to be updated to be a place where orthopaedics are to be predominately practiced, this can be done with no impact on hardware. To add this feature, no hardware needs to be replaced, only a software addition is required which NUCLeUS allows to be done remotely.

NUCLeUS Smart Application: Telestration

The Telestration feature (Smart App) allows video to be annotated (with areas highlighted or objects circled) to draw attention to pertinent details that the surgeon wishes to point out. Also, NUCLeUS provides the ability for other clinicians, from a remote location, to also annotate the video imagery in a purely collaborative manner. Traditionally, this was only accomplished by having colleagues visit the OR during a case thereby increasing the chances of contamination. With the ability to collaborate in a controlled, remote manner, physicians and hospitals can make more informed, team decisions thus impacting the chances of improved patient outcomes. Annotated imagery developed using the Telestration tool can also be broadcasted into teaching spaces (like all NUCLeUS video) providing a most valuable teaching tool.

Always looking to the future

The NUCLeUS design team at Sony is dedicated to developing new Smart Applications that will consistently benefit patients and physicians over time. Many other image enhancement tools related to resolution, colorization and video attributes for use in the OR will be introduced and made available based on the input of surgeons from many disciplines across the globe.
