Sony deploys all-IP production centre for SIC Portugal
Working closely with other key technology partners, Sony has led TV broadcaster SIC’s transformation of its programme production operations to IP – on time and on budget.

Committing to the future with IP
Relocating to a state-of-the-art new facility near Lisbon, privately-owned Portuguese broadcaster SIC has replaced its legacy SDI infrastructure with Europe´s first large-scale IP-based broadcast production environment based on the SMPTE ST.2110 suite of standards.
Adopting an open IP approach lets SIC route HDR-capable HD video plus audio, synchronisation and control data in real time over standard network infrastructures. The solution provided by Sony streamlines the interchange of professional AV media, allowing seamless integration between best-of-breed components and solutions from Sony plus other hardware and software vendors.

“This is the first real deep implementation of a high-speed network using the SMPTE ST.2110 family of protocols” says Fabien Pisano, Sales Head South Europe, Sony Europe. “Sony IP Live production is at the core of the facility. From the very beginning, SIC wanted a future-proofed solution, with a network based infrastructure using the most up-to-date open standards. Now SIC can benefit from two redundant studios connected to a live production data centre where resources are shared. Everything is connected over IP, and everything is synchronised using Precision Time Protocol (PTP).”
Sony has partnered with Telefónica, Cisco and other vendors to deliver all elements of SIC’s core IP infrastructure. Alongside delivery of IP-enabled hardware elements – including Sony XVS-7000 series video switchers and HDC-1700 studio cameras – the end-to-end solution offered by Sony also spans technical consultancy, engineering design, system integration, testing and acceptance, on-site training, technical support and overall project management.
