ITN invests in Sony MLS-X1 switcher to future-proof live news operation

UK news and media production company reinforces its commitment to a software-first all-IP future by investing in Sony’s highly scalable MLS-X1 live production switcher.

A commitment to tell authentic stories

Based in London, privately owned media producer ITN creates and delivers a wide range of news and factual content for international broadcasters and digital platforms. Driven by a commitment to tell authentic human-led stories, the award winning production company’s operations include daily news programmes for ITV, Channel 4 and 5 in the UK.

Underscoring its commitment to quality journalism and innovative broadcasting solutions, ITN has recently announced a significant investment in the Sony scalable live production MLS-X1 switcher to augment its news operations for Channel 4. This strategic move marks a decisive step in ITN’s transition towards an IP-defined, software-first approach, enhancing its production capabilities for the future.

The MLS-X1 is being installed at Channel 4 News’ headquarters, where the switcher will play a crucial role in the upcoming revamp of the broadcaster’s production control facilities at ITN that are set to go live later in 2025.

Alignment with evolving broadcast landscape

The decision to select the MLS-X1 has come when ITN is undergoing an in-depth review of its Channel 4 news operations. Its investment in the Sony switcher not only reflects ITN’s commitment to maintaining high production standards: it also aligns with the evolving broadcast technology landscape, where IP production workflows based on open standards are increasingly complementing or supplanting traditional SDI-based live production infrastructures.

Seamless integration with existing infrastructures

Designed to integrate smoothly with ITN’s existing broadcast systems, the MLS-X1 switcher provides additional power and flexibility to meet future production challenges. As a core component of Sony’s growing Networked Live ecosystem, the rack-mounted MLS-X1 supports integration with external devices via southbound communication protocols for advanced network messaging, streamlining the overall production process. The switcher also offers enhanced macro capabilities that let operators perform complex production tasks efficiently. Its ability to dynamically resize and reposition keys expands creative possibilities for live broadcasts, while new conditional actions enable more sophisticated control over production elements—helping ITN deliver high-quality content consistently.

Efficiency, creativity, flexibility

ITN’s decision to select the MLS-X1 comes after a competitive tender where Sony demonstrated a deep understanding of ITN’s operational needs. It’s anticipated that Sony’s technological collaboration will enhance ITN’s production capabilities to enable even more dynamic and engaging news coverage.

This investment is not just a technology refresh; it's about positioning ITN and Channel 4 News for the future. The MLS-X1 switcher will empower our expert team to continue delivering compelling news stories with greater efficiency and creativity, whilst also giving us the technical and workflow flexibility we need as our output continues to evolve.
