Coordinating a response to major disasters
Established after the earthquake that claimed over 17,000 lives in Turkey in August 1999, AKOM is a disaster information, crisis response and coordination centre that provides critical detail about a wide range of natural and human-induced disasters. Reliant on highly advanced technology to share statistical and visual data, its helps coordinate efforts by agencies affiliated with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), enabling them to deal efficiently with major incidents.
Serving as a model for other emergency coordination centres around the world, AKOM has played a key role during many disasters in Istanbul and across Turkey. As the main coordination facility to deal with such events, it features a dedicated control centre with an integrated smart conference room that provides staff working 24/7/365 with access to a huge amount of data and relevant information. Designed to be highly ergonomic, efficient and comfortable, the centre is equipped with supervisory control, facility security and advanced automation systems. In preparedness for worst-case emergency scenarios, highly resilient technical systems offer 24/7 redundancy to safeguard against any potential failures.
Visualising critical information on a huge scale
Dominating the main AKOM control and coordination room is a huge video and information display wall. The super-size screen plays a critical role in communicating vital information and tracking changes in the area affected by a disaster so that response teams can analyse local needs and understand the impact of current events.
With overall dimensions of 972.8 x 410.4 cm, the display is comprised of 16 x 12 Sony B-Series Crystal LED modules that deliver exceptionally bright, high-contrast images. Crystal LED’s power-packed X1 processor ensures superlative picture quality with extremely accurate colour reproduction, fluid movement and smooth tonal graduations without loss of dynamic detail. Sony’s Deep Black and Anti-Reflection Surface Technology contributes further to bright, high contrast images with vibrant colour that can be seen clearly from all viewing angles, even under bright ambient lighting conditions.
