How we helped

The Challenge

  • Visual display specialist required highest quality 4K projection system for pilot training simulation application
  • Customer requirements for high resolution, high contrast projectors with low ownership costs

The Solution

  • VPL-GTZ280 4K SXRD 4K laser projector with 2,000 lumens output
  • VPL-GTZ240 4K SXRD 4K laser projector with 2,000 lumens output

The Outcome

  • SXRD technology with native 4K resolution offers exceptional image detail, contrast and colour accuracy
  • Significantly reduced maintenance requirements with high reliability, no lamp changes and minimal colour adjustments

Sony GTZ is a high resolution, high contrast, low maintenance projector. All of those are things that are very important to our customer base, and have made it a real asset in adding it to our product.

Setting sky-high standards for image quality

RSi Visuals is a world-leading developer of specialist visual systems for pilot training. Headquartered in Texas, the company designs and integrates systems to support training requirements for both rotary and fixed wing aircraft in the commercial and military space. While many other flight simulators on the market only offer HD resolution, RSi was clear that it required a state-of-the-art projection solution with superior 4K resolution for integration with its own high-fidelity simulator products.

4K makes pilot training more immersive

‘Picture quality is really important in the flight simulation experience’ states John Wenzel, Test & Support Manager, RSi Visuals. ‘The goal is to provide safer skies for everybody, and having a realistic training experience is a big part of that. 4K resolution translates directly to greater acuity in a scene – the pilot’s ability to discern more detail. 4K also increases the immersion that leads to a more realistic training experience.’

Impressive brightness, resolution and contrast

RSi has selected Sony SXRD projection technology to achieve native 4K image resolution its simulator products. ‘Sony GTZ is a high resolution, high contrast, low maintenance projector’ confirms John. ‘All of those are things that are very important to our customer base, and have mave it a real asset in adding it to our product.’ Delivering a powerful 2,000 lumens output, the VPL-GTZ280 4K SXRD 4K laser projector is featured in RSi’s flagship Epic Visual Systems product line, chosen by major aviation customers including British Airways. Offering the same true 4K image quality and 2,000 lumen brightness in a compact footprint, seven VPL-GTZ240 projectors are integrated in RSi’s Epic-Dome Visual Display System, as delivered to TRU Simulation + Training for their T-6 operational flight trainer.

Reduced maintenance, lower ownership costs

As John states, reliability and running costs were also crucial factors in the company’s choice of Sony SXRD laser projection technology: ‘Minimal maintenance is important to RSi and our customers, with no lamp changes and minimal colour adjustments needed to match adjacent projectors.’ John also reports a highly positive experience of working with Sony as a partner. ‘Sony has done an excellent job of supporting the product that we’ve fielded. They’ve also actively sought input on our future endeavours.’
