To Grow in Outdoor Coverage

Vietnam has seen its broadcast industry expand by leaps and bounds. The country is on track to go fully digital in 2020, and provincial TV stations in particular have pulled out all the stops to bring digital TV to their audiences.

340km south of Hanoi lies Ha Tinh Province, an area renowned for its rich cultural and historical heritage as well as the iconic Hong Linh Mountains. Like many provinces in Vietnam, Ha Tinh Province has its very own dedicated TV station that provides a wide range of programmes to its 1.28 million population.

Established in 1956, Ha Tinh Radio and TV Station (HTTV) has always strived to stand out in Vietnam’s competitive broadcast industry. After years of providing only radio coverage, the station aired its first TV programme in 1991. In 2018, HTTV aired its first High Definition programme and has never looked back. Even with its modest annual budget, it has consistently invested in the latest products and technology.

Says Nguyen Van Hien, Vice-Director, Ha Tinh Radio and TV Station: “We’re witnessing a rapid development in broadcasting and social media. With our limited budget we have to carefully invest in technology and products that will serve our needs now and in the future.”

Although HTTV draws a fair amount of programming content from the country’s national TV station, Vietnam TV, it also produces a full range of programmes targeted at its provincial viewers. A key growth area for HTTV was its outdoor coverage.

Adds Mr. Hien: “Ha Tinh Province is a big area and we needed a reliable Outside Broadcast van that is suitable for our terrain and tropical weather conditions. HTTV worked closely with Sony to equip our OB van with a range of products that could also be deployed easily in our studios.”

HDC-1700, A Future-Ready Camera

HTTV already has a sizeable Sony inventory. Its latest Sony acquisitions include the HDC-1700 System Camera (4 units), HDCU-3100 Camera Control Unit, MVS-3000A HD/SD video Switcher, PMW-1000 HD/SD SXS Memory Card Deck and Bravia Professional Monitor FW-55BZ35F.

HTTV is the first TV station in Vietnam to acquire the HDCU- 3100 CCU. Not only is it the perfect complement for the HDC- 1700, the new-generation CCU was specifically chosen as it is IP-enabled and could be upgraded to 4K, giving HTTV tremendous opportunities down the road.

Explains Mr. Hien of the new additions: “All the products were carefully selected to meet both our needs in the OB van as well as in the studios. Our two selected cameras were chosen for their versatility in the field as well as in the studio. Likewise for the switcher which is compact enough to work in tight environments.”

Mr. Hien especially liked the HDC-1700’s impressive capabilities. The portable camera truly answered HTTV’s specifications for a future-ready camera as it can be upgraded for 4K resolution content creation as well as 4K Live High Dynamic Range (HDR).

A key consideration in the selection of Sony products for HTTV was the excellent after-sales support. Says Mr. Hien: “We are investing in quality products to meet the demands of everyday broadcasting. With Sony’s proven after-sales service and support, we have a partner that will help HTTV scale new heights of excellence.”
