Moving forward with 4K production
Serbia’s public service broadcaster, Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), delivers news, political, drama, cultural and sports programing to audiences through TV, radio and Internet platforms.
“In 2020 we started experimental broadcasts of a 4K TV channel,” states Olga Kepić, Head of System Engineering at RTS. “The next step was to have a studio that can broadcast in 4K. In our procurement process, Sony met all the technical requirements, and we purchased the XVS-6000 video switcher.”
Remote switcher operation from any location
During construction of its new 4K-equipped studio, the broadcaster faced the challenges of the global pandemic that limited staffing levels in studio control rooms and made physical travel to the Belgrade site impossible. Despite this, Sony was able to provide remote training and support for RTS staff, allowing successful installation and commissioning of its new vision switcher. This was achieved via the switcher’s Virtual Panel and Virtual Menu capabilities that allowed Sony personnel to configure and operate the XVS-6000 from any location via an Internet-connected PC and web browser.
Embracing new production opportunities
“I have 26 years experience of working with Sony switchers,” says vision switcher operator Ivan Pavlović. “The XVS-6000 is operating in 4K resolution, and is much faster to operate than other models. The new Virtual Panel and Virtual Menu features enable us to control the vision switcher from another computer over the Internet. During the pandemic, it’s been a great service for trainers from Sony to educate our staff how this switcher works.”
“These remote tools from Sony gave us the perfect opportunity for a different approach to production in these challenging times,” confirms Olga.
Control remotely with Virtual Panel
The Virtual Panel application allows control of switcher functions from multiple production positions. It’s easy to configure remote operation of single or multiple M/E strips, aux rows – or the entire switcher – via a customizable GUI. Any function that’s available on the switcher mainframe can be controlled via one or more virtual panels, and macros can be created to perform complex or repetitive procedures. Available via an optional user license, the application is also valuable for use in studios under automation control. An operator can pre-program required effects on the virtual panel, removing the need for a dedicated hardware panel.
Configure remotely with Virtual Menu
This application allows remote system setup and access to many of the XVS switcher’s more engineering-focused features, whether it’s renaming a source, loading frame memories or adjusting colorimetry of an input. Offering full control of the majority of switcher parameters via a touchscreen menu display, Virtual Menu allows staff working remotely to perform all the same tasks they would using the switcher’s normal menu.
