Raycom Sports protects its content and profits
Raycom Sports has transferred over 40 years’ worth of content into a Sony Optical Disc Archive system. Now its invaluable sports footage is safe and ready to license and distribute whenever needed.
- Raycom had over 40 years of valuable sports content that it needed to preserve, stored on almost 40,000 tapes
- These existing storage tapes included every format from Betacam to ¾ inch, making footage retrieval complex and impractical for video licensing
- Off-site storage would be too expensive and slow for a modern, digital workflow
- A smart, digital archiving system that keeps all of Raycom’s historic content safe, in one place
- Fast access to years of footage, whenever it’s needed, thanks to rapid read/write speeds and smart management
- Over 600 TB of storage and the ability to increase this as much as the business wants in the future
- Increased video licensing revenues, now that all of Raycom’s content—especially its Atlantic Coast Conference footage—is digitally accessible
- Safe content for years to come, with media cartridges designed to last more than 100 years
- Low, predictable storage costs, thanks to backward-compatible media that doesn’t wear out
We saw the success that the Golf Channel and the Carolina Panthers had with their ODA solutions, and we knew that this asset library could transform and underpin our productions for years to come.

College sports heritage
Raycom Sports began delivering content to networks and producers across the USA in 1979. Known for collegiate sports coverage, specifically the Atlantic Coast Conference, the company has won 34 regional Emmy awards since 2009. With decades of historic content, and a constantly growing archive, Raycom needed digital storage that would keep its content safe but accessible.
Accessible archiving & faster workflows
Raycom transferred over 40 years’ worth of content from more than 40,000 tapes into a 600 TB archive. Now, editors can quickly access any content they need, and archive it, making production workflows faster and more efficient. And Raycom can more easily license and share its historic content with other media companies—all while knowing its most valuable assets are kept safe.
Scaling up, controlling costs
Raycom’s video content will always be quickly accessible, whether it was recorded yesterday or 30 years ago. And because its archive is now fully scalable, the business can easily add more storage as needed. With ‘touchless,’ backward-compatible media, costs will be more predictable too: no wear and tear from the read-write process, and no need to transfer to new discs.
