Sony Japan helps ABC Osaka TV build 4K HDR-capable IP Live production studio
SMPTE ST 2110-based design ready for IP transition of entire facility
- The previous HD studio, built in 2005 and relocated in 2008, needed renovation
- The new studio needed to be 4K capable, without compromising the flexibility and scalability of daily HD work
- An IP-based design for 4K (UHD) would be more beneficial than a 12G or 3G system for simplified I/O matrix and system interface
- Full SMPTE ST2110-based solution, to match the global industry standard
- Hybrid design, with IP live for 4K (UHD) and low-latency SDI for HD
- High reliability, thanks to a complete Spine/Leaf redundant switch configuration, which wasn’t possible with a traditional SDI system
- Router matrix and master control will also be upgraded to IP in the near future
- Resource sharing between facilities will be possible once a further studio is upgraded to IP
- Initial investment in IP will let the team build their expertise for future upgrades
The network center and master control room will also be upgraded, moving the entire facility to IP infrastructure and making resource sharing a reality.

Sony System Design and Integration
Upgrading to an IP live system involved a thorough process. A number of different ideas and conceptual systems were designed and compared to determine the best solution, which needed a good balance between scalability and cost. While other venders provided conceptual pictures only, the Sony team repeatedly offered detailed drawings, with model names and extensive context. The IP live studio is now in operation, offering a stable, reliable workspace.
