Look-Up-Tables from Sony and third-parties for on-set monitoring and color grading

What is a LUT?
A LUT (Look-Up-Table) is simply a table of fixed numerical values that can be applied to video to alter its look. It can change an image’s contrast or color or both. 1D LUTs are the simplest, each input value mapping to a single output value, while 3D LUTs are more sophisticated and can apply to a co-ordinate set of colors.

Benefits of LUTs
A LUT or Look-Up Table makes it easy to apply a wide variety of different looks to your video content. It’s often used when shooting RAW or log content, which may initially look quite flat but contains large amounts of information for post-production creativity.
There are “technical” LUTs that are used to convert between different television standards, perhaps from S-Log3 to Rec-709 as well as creative LUTs that can be used to create an almost endless range of different visual looks and styles.
LUTs from Sony
Sony engineers have developed LUTs designed to facilitate specific functions for filmmakers. These are all available free of charge.
Sony Look Profiles
These LUTs are designed to provide an easy starting point when color grading for a typical broadcast TV workflow. Originally developed to exploit the exceptional color reproduction and latitude of the F65 and F55, they are also useful for subsequent large format sensor cameras including FS7/FS5 Series.
Look Profiles are provided as 3D LUT files to apply with color grading tools. They support RAW, SR File, XAVC and MPEG2 workflows.

BURANO LUTs for download
BURANO has four new looks – Warm, Cool, Vintage and Teal and Orange – to choose between alongside the established s709 and 709 (800) looks in Cine EI mode. Creatively tuned to suit typical shooting scenarios, they give the operator a choice of distinctive, engaging looks at the touch of a button. Moreover, LUT data from a shoot can be embedded in those clips’ metadata for an efficient color workflow.

s709 Monitor Look
Sony created these LUTs for on-set monitoring while shooting, as well as for clip review afterward. Developed alongside VENICE and also applicable to FX9, s709 renders imagery in subtle colors, with smooth color gradation and a softer low contrast tone curve. s709 is close to the film color characteristics, and allows directors, DOPs and cinematographers to have the final film look characteristics on location while shooting.
Third-Party LUTs from Creators
There are a wide variety of LUTs available from independent filmmakers.
